Angels and Redemption
During our RCIA meeting yesterday, something came up that I found extremely interesting concerning Angels and redemption.
The group leader mentioned that some of the Angels fell from Heaven and became evil. Now, Angels are closer to God than humans, but who did God grant redemption to? Humans. He loves humanity even more than the Angels who fell. Those Angels have never been forgiven, yet humanity, after having been ejected from the Garden of Eden, was forgiven.
I had never thought about it that way before. I knew that Angels are closer to God--there's even a passage saying that when Jesus was incarnated as human, he was then lesser than an Angel. But I never thought about God favoring humankind with forgiveness.
Guardian Angels or Warrior Angels?
It's funny, but the above happened right after I had spent an evening highlighting everything I could find about Angels in the Bible. From what I found, they were mighty warriors who destroyed armies more often than they were simple messengers. In fact, wings were never mentioned, but almost always the Angel held a sword.
So do we really have personal Guardian Angels, or are they Warrior Angels who battle evil anywhere they find it, which may sometimes happen to be around spiritual humans, so we have misinterpreted their presence as protecting an individual person rather than humanity as a whole?
Tess of the Weird Questions
If I had known just how mystical the Catholic religion is, it wouldn't have taken me 20 years to join it! LOL!
I'm having a lot of fun researching Angels. I've had a huge painting of one over our fireplace for over 20 years--long before I decided to become a Catholic.
You're right, there are legions of Angels that have different responsibilities from what I can tell so far from the Bible. I just feel sorry for my Guardian Angel--he's usually bored to death, punctuated by moments of sheer terror, I'm sure. LOL!
There are both . . . everyone has a personal guardian angel, this is Catholic Teaching, as well as, something that was confirmed by many of the saints but by my most favorite Padre Pio who sent his guardian angel out to work with other people's guardian angels all the time to help them.
Guardian angels can come in a variety of ways.
The warrior angels you mention are usually from the order of St. Michael, the Archangel. And they are absolutely warrior angels who hold the balance between good and evil in this realm. These are really astonishing angels to see or be in the presence of for an entirely different reason than the guardian angels or the other kinds.
Because there are other kinds of angels, too, that serve in a variety of functions.
When you are in the presence of St. Michael, you have a supreme reverence and a supreme realization of the power that God has given him to subdue evil, it's ominous but profound and not scary, but awe-inspiring.
When I used to see the Golden Angels, you would go into ecstasy just seeing them. And you felt absolute peace . . . total peace. It was a loving peace.
With St. Michaels angels you feel the awesome splendor, as well, but there is a powerful element that is hard to describe. With the Golden Angels, these are beautiful, stunning, also powerful but in a different way . . . they ARE peace. The essence of God's peace, and when you look at them, you can't take your eyes off of them.
But there are many other different kinds of angels, but I don't want to make it too complicated on the first answer.
Great question, Tess!
Thanks for the info on Angels. I'm glad to hear that there are so many different kinds with different responsibilities.
I don't know why, but I'm suddenly obsessed with researching them and learning all I can about them. They've been an interest of mine for as far back as I can remember, but for some reason they're at the forefront of my attention lately. I'm sure the reason why will make itself clear eventually. If you know the answer before I do, will you tell me? LOL
Those are excellent books on the angels. Check them out here at:
I also pulled out two other books I thought you might find interesting last night. Let me go get them and give you their titles:
Thanks, John, for these really good suggestions.
Much Love, Marilynn
